The AI Finance Stack: Tools That Actually Work
We've tested dozens of "AI-powered" finance tools. Most are hype. Here are the ones that actually deliver value for startups.

Accounting
QuickBooks, Xero
FP&A Tools
Runway, Mosaic
AI Assistants
Claude, ChatGPT
Expense
Ramp, Brex
Every finance tool now claims to be "AI-powered." Most of these claims amount to basic automation with marketing spin. But some tools genuinely leverage AI to deliver capabilities that weren't possible a few years ago.
At Eagle Rock CFO, we've tested tools across every category of startup finance. This guide shares our findings: what actually works, what's worth paying for, and how to build an AI-enhanced finance stack for your startup.
How We Evaluate
We test each tool with real client data (anonymized). We look for: genuine AI capabilities (not just rules), measurable time savings, accuracy improvements, and value relative to cost. No affiliate relationships influence our recommendations.
Our Evaluation Approach
We evaluate AI finance tools on four criteria:
AI Authenticity
Is there genuine machine learning, or is it just rules and automation with an "AI" label? We test whether the system actually learns and improves.
Time Savings
Does it actually reduce work, or does setup and maintenance eat the savings? We measure before/after time for common tasks.
Accuracy
How accurate are the outputs? We track error rates on categorization, predictions, and generated content.
Value/Cost
Is the price justified by the value delivered? We compare to alternatives and calculate effective hourly savings.

What We Don't Recommend
Red Flags We've Seen
- Tools claiming "full AI automation": If they claim to replace human judgment entirely, they're overselling
- AI features that require extensive setup: Good AI should work well out of the box, not require months of configuration
- Closed systems: Tools that don't integrate with your existing stack create more work, not less
- Enterprise-only pricing: Many tools price for Fortune 500, not startups. Look for startup-friendly tiers
Recommended Stack by Stage

- Accounting: QuickBooks Online Plus
- FP&A: Runway or Float
- Expense: Ramp Plus
- AI Assistant: Claude Pro + ChatGPT Plus

Pro Tip: Start Simple
Don't over-tool early. Start with the basics and add tools as you feel specific pain points. Every tool requires setup and maintenance time. Only add what you'll actually use.
